Internal shocks in blazar jets

چکیده
The discovery of strong γ–ray and hard X–ray emission and the results from various multifrequency campaigns have disclosed new aspects of the blazar phenomenology, leading to a much more robust understanding of the mechanisms underlying their emission, and offering clues for the energetics of their relativistic jets. I review these aspects, and propose that all the diversity in the blazar phenomenology depends on only one parameter. I also suggest that some of the blazar characteristics can be explained by the internal shock scenario, as proposed to explain the emission from γ–ray bursts.

Spectra and power of relativistic jets
The power of blazar jets rivals the power that gravity can extract from accreting matter. The mechanism launching and accelerating jets can be considered as the most efficient engine operating in radio–loud sources. It is still a matter of debate if the jet carries this power to the radio lobes, hundreds of kpc away, in the form of Poynting flux or bulk kinetic energy, or both, and if these two...
متن کاملCyclotron Maser Emission from Blazar Jets?
We consider the production of electron cyclotron maser emission by lowdensity, highly magnetized plasmas in relativistic jets. The population inversion required to drive cyclotron maser instability could occur in localized, transient sites where hydromagnetic instabilities, shocks, and/or turbulence lead to magnetic mirroring along current-carrying flux tubes. The maser is pumped by the convers...
متن کاملAre Quasar Jets Matter or Poynting Flux Dominated?
If quasar jets are accelerated by magnetic fields but terminate as matter dominated, where and how does the transition occur between the Poynting-dominated and matter-dominated regimes? To address this question, we study constraints which are imposed on the jet structure by observations at different spatial scales. We demonstrate that observational data are consistent with a scenario where the ...
متن کاملSpectral and Polarization Signatures of Relativistic Shocks in Blazars
Relativistic shocks are one of the most plausible sites of the emission of strongly variable, polarized multi-wavelength emission from relativistic jet sources such as blazars, via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of relativistic particles. This paper summarizes recent results on a self-consistent coupling of diffusive shock acceleration and radiation transfer in blazar jets. We demonstrate t...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Shocks in Blazar Jets
We consider the shock structures that can arise in blazar jets as a consequence of variations in the jet flow velocity. There are two possible cases: (1) A double shock system consisting of both a forward and reverse shock (2) A single shock (either forward or reverse) together with a rarefaction wave. These possibilities depend upon the relative velocity of the two different sections of jet. U...
